Website Bright Blue

Bright Blue is an independent think tank for liberal conservatism. We defend and improve liberal society.

About Bright Blue

Bright Blue is the independent think tank for liberal conservatism. We have a big mission: to defend and improve liberal society. Our job is vital: to protect liberal ideas – the bedrock of the progress and prosperity that Western countries have enjoyed in recent decades – from being attacked and hijacked by the reactionary right and the communalist left.

Since we became a professional think tank in 2014, we have grown significantly in size, profile, reputation and influence. We are now one of the most influential research and advocacy organisations in the UK. We have been shortlisted as the Energy and Environment Think Tank of the Year and Social Policy Think Tank of the Year in the prestigious Prospect Magazine awards four years in a row.

Over 70 original Bright Blue policies have been adopted by successive Governments over the past decade. We almost always receive national, often front page, media coverage for our work.

Bright Blue has sought not only to produce rigorous and respected research and to be an ideas engine for successive Governments, but to build a community of like-minded people, both inside and outside of Parliament, through our membership of around 1,000 members and donors. We have made liberal conservatism, defined by our ten key principles, a distinctive and recognisable political philosophy with a lasting impact on public attitudes and policy.

The Role

We are looking for a Research Intern to join us for six months. This role is ideal for a candidate looking for training to prepare them for a career in public policy. Based on performance, there may be an offer to become a permanent member of Bright Blue’s team at the end of the internship.

The successful candidate will be an integral part of the team and support the research, communications, events and administration of our projects. They will receive training in different research techniques, policy formulation and report writing.

We are looking for talented, hard-working people who wish to build a career and profile in public policy. The successful candidate will be industrious and have an entrepreneurial mindset, demonstrate intellectual creativity and rigour, and have excellent attention to detail. The successful candidate must have a strong background in and enjoyment of extensive research and writing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting literature reviews and briefings for research projects.
  • Designing and analysing polling, focus groups and depth interviews.
  • Writing articles for Bright Blue’s Centre Write blog and other national platforms.
  • Co-authoring research papers.
  • Editing the work of thought leaders.
  • Generating imaginative and credible policy ideas.
  • Writing research proposals for potential projects.
  • Helping to organise a variety of Bright Blue events.
  • Drafting speaker and attendee briefings for our events.

Person Specification

Essential

  • A belief in Bright Blue’s core values.
  • A good educational background.
  • Excellent writing ability, critical thinking, intellectual rigour and attention to detail.
  • Strong work ethic, a desire to learn and the ability to work both independently and in teams.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset, with a desire to create new work and opportunities for Bright Blue.
  • A keen interest in public policy.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in politics or analysing policy.
  • A strong background in quantitative research.
